Bromo Mountain


The Bromo Mountain is an active mountain also the most well-known touristic object in East Java. This site shows a beauty you can’t find in another place. From the top of this active volcanic mountain you can enjoy a view of 10 km square of sand overlay, and watch the greatness of Semeru Mountain which rises through the clouds. 

Most visitors come to this region in dawn to be able to see the sun rising. You have to hike Pananjakan Mountain which is the highest mountain in this area. For you who want to enjoy the dawn without getting tired, the locals provide hardtop cars, which are rented for the visitors to enjoy the beauty of Bromo peak.

Once you reach the top, there are many shops which provide warm coffee and tea with camp fire to warm your body while waiting for the sun to rise. There are also shops which hire warm clothes out. You can also buy typical Bromo souvenirs which are often used to see the sunrise. When the sky brightens, you can see the round sun like a small marble, slowly becoming bigger and eventually forms a complete circle giving light which makes you to see alps view in this area.

After watching the sunrise on Pananjakan and on your way to Bromo, you can see a barren area which full of sand and overgrown by dried grass. Beside the sand overlay, Bromo also provides a not less interesting view, The Bromo Mountain Crater. In order to see this crater, you have to take 250 stairs, once you reach the Bromo peak which is 2.392 M high above the sea level, then you can see the crater of Bromo Mountain which produce smoke. You can also see the sand overlay with a shrine in the center. It’s really a rare and extraordinary sight which can be enjoyed at Bromo Mountain Peak.

 
To reach the foot of the mountain, you have to rent a horse for an affordable price, IDR 70.000, although you go on foot.

Besides watching the beautiful panorama which Bromo offers, if you come on the right date and the right time you can see the Kesodo Ceremony, held by the Tengger society. This ceremony is usually held from midnight until dawn at every full moon around the 14th or 15th in the tenth month according to the Javanese calendar. Kesodo ceremony is done to plead for overflow harvest and to decline disaster, or to plead for cure from various disease, they present offerings by throwing it into the Bromo crater. While the procession takes place, other Tengger people go down the edge of the peak with their offerings and throw it, as a symbol of blessing from the Almighty.
